Swarthmore College announced on May 26, 2026 that it will cover the full cost of tuition for any admitted student whose family earns $200,000 or less per year, starting with the 2027-28 academic year. Room, board, and fees are not included in the guarantee, but the college's aid packages already cover most of those costs for lower-income families.
Swarthmore College, the selective liberal arts school outside Philadelphia ranked consistently in the top five nationally in its category, announced May 26 that it will guarantee free tuition for families earning under $200,000 a year.1
The program is called the Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee. It takes effect for students enrolling in fall 2027, meaning the incoming Class of 2031 — who will apply this coming fall — will be the first cohort eligible.
What the Guarantee Actually Covers
The Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee covers the full cost of tuition for families earning $200,000 or less annually, provided the family has "typical assets" for that income level. The typical-assets qualifier means the guarantee targets families without unusually large investment portfolios or real estate holdings relative to their reported income. Families with high net worth but moderate earned income may not qualify.
Tuition is one cost. Room, board, and mandatory fees are not part of the guarantee. For lower-income families, Swarthmore's financial aid packages already cover those items — but students in the $150,000-$200,000 range should run the net price calculator to understand their full picture.
More than 55 percent of Swarthmore students currently receive financial aid. The average aid package runs approximately $75,000 per year.1

Why This Became Possible Now
Swarthmore credited a specific policy shift for enabling the guarantee: recent federal legislation changed how college and university endowments are taxed. The adjustment freed up endowment resources, and Swarthmore is directing those funds toward financial aid.
The college's total financial aid budget is growing to more than $71 million for the 2026-27 academic year. The Tuition Guarantee formalizes that trajectory into a standing promise rather than a year-by-year decision.1
This mechanism matters beyond Swarthmore. Other wealthy liberal arts colleges are watching the same endowment tax shift. The University of Chicago announced free tuition for families under $250,000 earlier this year, and Yale set its own threshold at $200,000 in January. In each case, a large endowment — and favorable tax treatment of it — is what made the announcement possible.
What If Your Family Earns More Than $200K
The guarantee cuts off at $200,000 in household income, but Swarthmore's broader aid program reaches higher. The college's stated goal is making aid available to families earning $200,000, $250,000, $300,000, and in some cases more.1 Families above the guarantee threshold may still receive meaningful grant aid — just not guaranteed free tuition.

At liberal arts colleges with endowments over $1 billion, the net price for a family earning $175,000 is often lower than in-state tuition at a flagship public university. Run the calculator before you decide a school is out of reach financially.
How to Apply If You're Aiming for Swarthmore
The Class of 2031 application cycle opens this summer. Swarthmore uses the Common Application exclusively, which opens August 1. Swarthmore requires standardized test scores, so students should confirm their SAT test date registration before applications open in the fall.
Financial aid at Swarthmore requires both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile. The CSS Profile collects more detailed household financial information than the FAFSA and is used by most highly selective private schools. Our CSS Profile vs. FAFSA guide explains what additional documents and data points you will need to gather.
