Last reviewed: August 7, 2026. The Department of Education has published the first regulatory step for the 2027-28 form and is targeting the standard October 1 launch. We will update this page the day the form opens.
You did not miss it. As of today the 2027-28 FAFSA does not exist yet, and nothing about your aid eligibility has been decided without you. Here is the full timeline, who this form is for, and the short list of things worth doing before it opens.
When Does the 2027-28 FAFSA Come Out?
The Department of Education has begun the formal process of building the 2027-28 FAFSA, publishing the draft form for public comment, which is the first step in every year's development cycle.1 The Department says the application is on track to launch by October 1, 2026, the standard opening date set in federal student aid's annual calendar.1
Recent history supports taking that target seriously. The 2026-27 form launched on September 24, 2025, a week ahead of schedule and the earliest launch in the program's history, after two rocky years of delayed rollouts.2 An early or on-time launch is now the Department's public benchmark, which means planning around the first week of October is reasonable, and being ready in late September is smart.
The CSS Profile, the separate aid application used by a few hundred mostly private colleges, opens for 2027-28 on October 1 as well. If any school on your list requires it, our CSS Profile versus FAFSA breakdown explains how the two differ.
Is the 2027-28 FAFSA Your Form?
More aid is lost to filing the wrong year than to almost any other FAFSA mistake. The rule: file the form that matches the school year you will be attending.
- High school class of 2027, starting college in fall 2027: the 2027-28 FAFSA is yours. You file it during your senior year, ideally in October 2026.
- Current college students returning for the 2027-28 year: also yours. The FAFSA is not one-and-done; you refile every year you want aid.
- High school class of 2026 students already enrolled this fall: your current aid comes from the 2026-27 form you already filed. You will file the 2027-28 form this fall for next year.
- Transfer students and adults starting or returning in fall 2027 or spring 2028: the 2027-28 form covers you too.
If you need aid for the school year happening right now, that is the 2026-27 FAFSA, which is already open. Our 2026-27 FAFSA deadline guide covers that cycle.
The Three Deadline Layers, in the Order They Actually Bite
The published federal deadline makes the FAFSA look leisurely. It is not, because the deadlines that control real money arrive in reverse order of how prominently they are posted.
College priority deadlines come first. Many colleges set financial aid priority dates between November 2026 and February 2027 for incoming students, often aligned with Early Decision and Early Action application deadlines. File after the priority date and you can be admitted but miss the strongest institutional aid packages.
State deadlines come second, and they vary wildly. Some states award grants until money runs out, which quietly turns "deadline" into "the earlier you file, the more exists." Others set hard cutoffs, many clustering between February and April 2027. Check yours in our state-by-state FAFSA deadline guide.
The federal deadline comes last and matters least. The 2027-28 form stays open until June 30, 2028, the end of the award year, with a short correction window after.3 Filing that late preserves federal loan eligibility and little else. By then, most state and institutional grant money is long gone.
Several major state grant programs pay out first come, first served. Filing in October versus February can be the difference between a grant and a waitlist even when both are officially on time. When the form opens, the first two weeks are the cheap insurance window.
What You Can Do Before It Opens
The useful prep list is short, and all of it removes friction from filing week.
Create FSA IDs now. The student needs one, and at least one parent needs their own if the student is a dependent. Accounts are created at StudentAid.gov, and identity verification can take a few days, which is exactly the delay you do not want in October.3
Know that your tax year is already locked. The 2027-28 FAFSA uses 2025 tax information under the prior-prior year rule.3 Your 2025 return was filed months ago, which means the income picture for this aid year is already set. Nothing you earn or shelter in 2026 changes it. If your family's finances have dropped since 2025 because of a job loss, divorce, or medical costs, you do not fix that on the form; you file normally and then request a professional judgment review, which our special circumstances appeal guide walks through.
Consent to the IRS data exchange when asked. Tax data flows into the form automatically once each contributor consents, and aid eligibility requires that consent. Refusing it is one of the fastest ways to break an otherwise complete application.3
Line up the short document list. Beyond taxes: current balances for savings and investments, records of any child support received, and the student's Social Security number or A-number. The full walkthrough lives in our step-by-step FAFSA guide, and the pre-launch version is our October 1 preparation checklist.
54.7%
of the high school Class of 2026 completed a FAFSA by May 1, an all-time record. Early launches are pulling filing earlier every year, which raises the cost of being late.
The Rules Underneath This FAFSA Changed in July 2026
The 2027-28 cycle is the first full application year under the borrowing rules that took effect July 1, 2026. Two changes matter most for families comparing the aid offers this FAFSA will generate.
Parent PLUS borrowing is now capped at $20,000 per year per student with a $65,000 lifetime limit, where it was previously uncapped up to the cost of attendance. Families who assumed PLUS loans would cover any gap need a different plan, and our breakdown of the Parent PLUS caps covers the details and the grandfathering rules.
Repayment options also consolidated. New borrowers now choose between the Standard Plan and the income-based Repayment Assistance Plan, with the older income-driven plans closed to them. Before your student borrows a dollar against a 2027-28 aid offer, it is worth ten minutes with our guide to the new repayment plans.
The practical takeaway: net price comparisons matter more this cycle than last, because the borrowing backstop families used to paper over gaps is smaller.
A Realistic 2027-28 Timeline
- August and September 2026: create FSA IDs, gather documents, confirm which schools need the CSS Profile.
- By October 1, 2026: the form is expected to open. File within the first two weeks if you can.
- November 2026 through February 2027: college priority deadlines and many early state deadlines pass.
- Winter and spring 2027: aid offers arrive with admission decisions; compare them and appeal if your finances changed after 2025.
- June 30, 2028: the federal window closes for the 2027-28 year.3
File even if you are sure you will not qualify for need-based grants. The FAFSA is the gate for federal loans and work-study regardless of income, many colleges require it before releasing any aid including some merit awards, and some states surprise families with eligibility. The application is free, and skipping it forecloses options you may want in April.
FAQ
When does the 2027-28 FAFSA open?
It is expected by October 1, 2026. The Department of Education has started the formal development process for the form and says it is on track, and the 2026-27 form launched a week early on September 24, 2025, the earliest in program history.1 Plan for early October and be ready in late September.
Who needs to file the 2027-28 FAFSA?
Anyone who wants federal, state, or most institutional aid for the 2027-28 school year: high school seniors in the class of 2027 heading to college in fall 2027, current college students returning that year, and transfer or returning adult students starting in that year.
What tax year does the 2027-28 FAFSA use?
Tax year 2025. Under the prior-prior year rule, the form pulls your 2025 return through the IRS data exchange once you consent.3 If your finances have worsened since 2025, file normally and then request a special circumstances review from each college's aid office.
What is the deadline for the 2027-28 FAFSA?
The federal window runs until June 30, 2028, but that date only protects federal loan eligibility.3 The deadlines that control grant money come much earlier: college priority dates starting around November 2026 and state deadlines that cluster from February to April 2027, with some states paying first come, first served.
Can I file before I know where I'm going to college?
Yes, and you should. The FAFSA lets you list multiple schools, and every listed school receives your information and builds an aid offer if you are admitted. You do not need an admission decision, a final list, or even a completed application to file.
Should we file if our income is too high for aid?
File anyway. The FAFSA opens access to federal loans and work-study at any income, many colleges will not release institutional aid of any kind without it, and eligibility surprises are common because the formula weighs family size, number in college, and assets in ways a salary alone does not predict.
